Functioning of the Code Interpreter

When you ask ChatGPT a question, it uses a technology called a large language model (L.L.M.) to predict the next word in a sequence and form a response.

But, when you turn on the code interpreter, ChatGPT creates and runs a piece of software code to get the answer. OpenAI states that this allows the chatbot to do new things, like making complex calculations and creating diagrams from user-given data.

Some believe that the code interpreter can reduce errors, a common issue with L.L.M.s. Ethan Mollick, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said after testing the code interpreter for two months, “The code clearly does what it’s supposed to.”

Uses of the Code Interpreter

The main use of the code interpreter is analyzing data. For instance, if you ask ChatGPT to “find interesting points in this data,” it can go through specific data like financial, health, or location details and provide insights. Financial professionals use this tool for tasks such as analyzing stock prices and making budgets.

Researchers also use this tool for unique data visuals. Dr. Mollick recently used the code interpreter to make a 3D chart of the Billboard Hot 100 list and an animated map of all the lighthouses in the US. Others have used the tool to change file formats, like turning pictures into videos or PDFs into images.

But, Arvind Narayanan, a computer science professor at Princeton University, warns about relying too much on the code interpreter for data analysis. He points out that AI can sometimes give wrong results and spread misinformation. He emphasizes, “Analyzing data properly requires a lot of critical thinking.”
